yes, i think there was barking.
did y’all watch the opening ceremony friday night? we did….i flipped to it just because i happened to know it would be on, and i also knew i wouldn’t have anything better to do. well. i found it freaking amazing. also, in parts, i found it intimidating and frightening, but mostly just incredible that so many people could move in perfect unison in so many different and lovely ways. anyhow, i just didn’t expect it to be that interesting or moving. later, upon reflection, i think i have come to realize why that might be: the ‘96 olympics opening ceremony, which happened right here in our backyard. that opening ceremony was also spectacular, but only in its abysmal failure to be in any way inspiring, interesting, or well…..good. it was not at all good. in fact, if you’ll recall, the highlight of the ceremony was none other than pickup trucks. i told my mom this, as she watched along with me friday night, both of our jaws dropped, muttering to each other every now and then. i thought she would remember. she had no recollection of the atrocity, so i looked it up on youtube for her to see. i had forgotten the few dozen cheerleaders, cloggers, and step dancers, who were the other highlights of the show….the trucks eventually circled around to shine their headlights on them. sometimes these people would sort of shuffle around in a way that was supposed to make letters. they were usually not successful. i can’t make this stuff up, guys. it’s true. it happened. click below to relive it yourself. it picks up around a minute and a half, and what a ride after that! welcome to the world, indeed. the world of high school football halftimes in the south. and were they really BARKING? surely not. oh god, they were barking.

Man! I missed all the redneck goodness. That summer I was out in Texas with Du while he was in training. I can’t believe I missed being a part of that history…

It makes me all warm and gushy inside. I makes me miss my Friday night Demon football games. It makes me wanna wanna bark…”Goooooooooooooooooooooooo Dawgs, sic ‘em, woof-woof-woof-woof!”
I see nothing wrong with this display of southern pride and heritage. To this day it was the highlight of the ‘96 games.
I know you are not the least bit surprised by this. I also know that deep down, in places we don’t talk about in polite company, you truly love me for this. Admit it. Go ahead…

I guess I’m the dweeb now, because I still wear scrungies. But I rarely bark, and never in public.

I might remind you that the excitement of ‘96 was in the Japan vs USA baseball, where we (USA) kicked …butt-member 7th inning stoppage due to increasing point separation.
